Things to do in Patnitop
Patnitop sits at about 2,024 m on a saddle of the Shivalik range, 112 km from Jammu on the old alignment of the Jammu–Srinagar national highway. Until the Chenani–Nashri tunnel opened in 2017 every vehicle to Kashmir crawled through it; now the highway passes underneath and Patnitop has become what it always wanted to be, a quiet resort of deodar forest, meadows and huts, with the valley of the Chenab falling away below. It is the Jammu region's counterpart to Gulmarg: visited all year, at its best in the snow.
Walk the meadows and the deodar forest
The resort is small enough to walk end to end. The meadows around the JKTDC huts and the Patnitop park are the main lawns, and forest paths lead off in every direction under tall deodars; the loop past the three freshwater springs below the town, whose water is credited locally with medicinal properties, is the classic short walk. The Naag temple, a small wooden shrine to the serpent deity, is a few hundred metres from the centre. Views open south over the plains on clear mornings and north to the snow ridges of the Pir Panjal.
Nathatop and the snow
Nathatop, about 10 km up a side road, is the high point at roughly 2,700 m: an open ridge that catches the first snow in December and keeps it into March, when it becomes the region's sledging and beginner ski slope, and in summer a paragliding launch and picnic ridge with a view across to the Kashmir ranges. It is a short taxi ride, and the road is cleared after snowfall but can close during it.
Sanasar and Sudh Mahadev
Sanasar, about 20 km west, is a bowl-shaped meadow with a small lake, paragliding and huts, and makes the best full day from Patnitop. In the other direction, Sudh Mahadev, about 40 km away, is a Shiva temple with an ancient trident and a spring, with the meadow of Mantalai beyond; the Sudh Mahadev fair in June–July draws pilgrims from across the region.
Best time to visit Patnitop
Patnitop is an all-season destination; people come throughout the year, and each season offers something different. The best time to visit is December to February for snow, when the huts and deodars are white and Nathatop is a snowfield.
- December to February, the best time: snow on the resort and heavy snow on Nathatop; sledging, beginner skiing and snow play. Nights are well below freezing; check the road before driving up during a storm.
- March and April: the thaw, with snow lingering on Nathatop into March and the meadows greening below; quieter and mild.
- May and June: the summer peak, when the plains are at 40 °C and Patnitop is 20 °C cooler; book ahead for weekends.
- July to September: the monsoon, misty and green, with landslides possible on the approach roads in heavy rain.
- October and November: clear skies, cool days and the best views of the year; the quietest weeks.
A weekend from Jammu
Patnitop works as a two-day trip from Jammu: up in the morning, an afternoon of walking, a night in a hut or hotel, then Nathatop and Sanasar the next day before the drive down. It also makes a natural halt on a road trip between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley for anyone who would rather break the journey in the hills than in a highway town. There is no reason to hurry it into a single day from Jammu, though it can be done.

How do you get to Patnitop?
Planning how to reach Patnitop is a matter of one road: the old national highway alignment from Udhampur, which the tunnel now leaves to local traffic.
By road: from Jammu it is about 112 km and 3 to 3½ hours: the highway to Udhampur, then, instead of the tunnel, the old road up through Chenani and Kud to the resort. From the Kashmir Valley, leave the highway at Nashri and climb the old road through Batote. By rail: Udhampur, about 45 km, is the nearest station with regular services from Jammu; a taxi from the station is the usual onward leg. By air: Jammu Airport, about 115 km.
Buses and shared taxis run from Jammu and Udhampur to Kud and Patnitop; a hired car is easier if you want Nathatop and Sanasar as well. Jammu city is the usual base before or after, and our Srinagar guide covers the valley end of the highway.
What should you know before visiting Patnitop?
These Patnitop travel tips are for a resort where the weather, not the sights, decides the day.
- In winter carry chains or hire a vehicle with them; the last climb from Kud ices over and the police can hold traffic below.
- Book huts and hotels ahead for December holidays and May–June weekends; the resort is small and fills.
- Dress for the top, not the town: Nathatop is several degrees colder and windier than Patnitop.
- Ask before paragliding who the operator is, what insurance covers, and whether the launch site is Nathatop or Sanasar that day.
- Walks in the deodar forest are easy but unmarked; keep to the tracks and turn back before dusk.
- Carry cash; card machines and phone signal are patchy away from the centre.
- Take litter away, and do not feed monkeys around the park and the springs.
Common questions
Is Patnitop worth visiting after the tunnel bypassed it?
More than before. The through traffic has gone, so the resort is quieter, and the old road is now a scenic drive rather than a crawl. It is still only three hours from Jammu.
Where is the snow, Patnitop or Nathatop?
Both in a good winter, but Nathatop is reliably deeper and lasts longer, so that is where the sledging and skiing happen. Patnitop itself is about the huts and forest under snow.
Can I see Patnitop and Sanasar in one day from Jammu?
Only as a long day with little time at either. Stay a night at Patnitop and give Sanasar its own morning.
