Bangus Valley is a valley in Kupwara district, Kashmir Valley. Kashmir Travel Guide is an independent travel guide to Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh, published at kashmirtravelguide.co.in, and this is its entry for Bangus Valley.
This Bangus Valley travel guide covers a high, forest-ringed meadow in Kupwara district, about 100 km from Srinagar: what the valley is, how it is reached, when it is at its best, and the fact that it has been closed to tourists since 2025.
Summary
In short: plan 1 day in Bangus Valley, come between Jun–Sep, arrive by air or rail.

Things to do in Bangus Valley
Bangus is a bowl of grassland roughly 3,000 m up in the north-west corner of the Kashmir Valley, about 29 km from Handwara. The main meadow, Bodh Bangus, runs east to west and is cut by a stream fed by a dozen or more side streams; Lokut Bangus, the smaller meadow, lies to its north-east. Conifer forest closes in on every side, and the district administration puts the whole area at around 300 sq km. There is no village, market or hotel on the meadow itself.
Walk the main meadow
The reason to come is space. The meadow is broad enough that a walk of an hour or two along the stream barely crosses it, and the pine edge gives shade and a change of view. Fix where the vehicle will wait, how far you will go and when you will turn back before you start; distances in open ground look shorter than they are.
Look for wildlife at the forest edge
The forest around Bangus is listed as habitat for musk deer, brown bear and several pheasant species, including the western tragopan. Sightings from the meadow are a matter of luck and quiet, and mostly happen early or late in the day. Do not go into the forest after them.
Stay on the meadow, not in it
When the valley is open, tea stalls, pony operators and tented camps appear in summer, as they did in 2024. Treat any of them as seasonal: none is a permanent facility, and nothing on the meadow is open when the valley is closed.
Best time to visit Bangus Valley
The natural season is short. Snow closes the approach roads from late autumn to late spring, so the practical window is June to September, with July and August giving the greenest meadow and the most settled walking conditions. September is drier and quieter, with cold nights.
Season is only half the answer here. Whether you can visit at all depends on the valley being open to tourists, and at the time of writing it is not.
Closed since 2025
Bangus was shut to visitors after the April 2025 attack in Pahalgam. On 16 February 2026 the Lieutenant Governor's office said it would reopen once snow had been cleared and safe road access restored, but the reopening did not follow: residents were still appealing for it in late May 2026, and on 5 September 2026 the valley was reported to be still closed, with local traders, hoteliers and transporters who had invested during the 2024 season out of work.
This guide was checked on 19 September 2026. Before planning anything, confirm with the Kupwara district administration or the Tourism Department that the valley has reopened to visitors. A road on a map, a taxi quote or a 2024 photograph is not evidence that you will be allowed in.
How much time should you allow?
From Srinagar, Bangus is a long day: roughly 100 km each way, the last part on hill roads, plus time on the meadow. Starting from Handwara or Kupwara makes it a comfortable day trip.
Overnight options, when the valley is open, are tented camps on the meadow in summer and rooms in Handwara or Kupwara. Camping needs the operator to hold whatever permission the authorities require; ask who holds it before paying. For a first visit, plan a day and treat a night on the meadow as a separate decision.

How do you get to Bangus Valley?
Working out how to reach Bangus Valley means choosing one of three approach roads, all of which start in Kupwara district and none of which has a scheduled bus to the meadow.
- Rajwar route from Handwara: the newest and, by most accounts, the easiest approach.
- Reshwari–Mawar route from Handwara: the older road, completed in 2022.
- Chowkibal route from Kupwara: the northern approach.
The district puts Bangus at about 29 km from Handwara and 42 km from Kupwara town. Whichever road you use, confirm with your driver that it is open and passable that day; these are hill roads that close with snow and can be damaged by rain.
By air: Srinagar Airport, about 90 km from Kupwara. By rail: Baramulla, on the Kashmir Valley line, is the railhead the district names for Kupwara, about 64 km away; check current services and arrange the road connection separately.
Hire a vehicle from Handwara or Kupwara if you can, since local drivers know which route is open. Agree the route, the stopping point, waiting time and the total fare, and ask what happens to your payment if the valley turns out to be closed. If you need a base before or after, our Srinagar guide covers where to stay. Lolab Valley, also in Kupwara, is a village landscape rather than a high meadow and is not a substitute for Bangus.
What should you know before visiting Bangus Valley?
These Bangus Valley travel tips assume a full day outdoors at 3,000 m with no shop, clinic or fuel pump on the meadow.
- Carry food, water and cash for the whole day. Tea stalls are seasonal and may not be there.
- Dress for a cold, windy afternoon even in July: a warm layer, a waterproof and shoes with grip.
- Ask about toilets before you leave Handwara; there are none you can count on.
- Keep the group together and stay on the paths and grazing tracks that exist. Do not drive onto the grass.
- Give livestock room, and do not enter herders' shelters.
- Take every wrapper and bottle back with you.
Common questions
Are Bangus and Bungus the same place?
Yes. Bungus is the spelling the district website uses; Bangus is the more common one. Both refer to the same valley in Handwara sub-district.
Is Bangus Valley open right now?
Check before you go. The most recent report we found, from 5 September 2026, described the valley as still shut to visitors despite the reopening promised in February. The Kupwara district administration is the authority to ask, and its answer should be dated for your travel day.
Can I drive across the meadow?
No. Vehicles stop at the road head. The grassland is grazing land and walking country, and driving on it damages it.
